FEDERATION Y/BIRD SEASON UNDERWAY
The Ulster Federation were in Navan for the first young bird race on July 14, some 67 miles into Belfast. With bad weather expected for the afternoon the birds were released at the earlier time of 8.30am into a light South Easterly wind. It turned out a very fast race with some velocities reaching 60mph or close to 1760ypm. Most members reported the birds high in the sky and having difficulty dropping on to home lofts. Congratulations to the first week winner Joe Smyth of the big Grosvenor HPS who had almost 600 birds competing the opening week. His winner was timed at 9.37am and takes 1st Open Ulster Federation doing velocity 1755. All four birds in the clock won prizes in the club, a loft in top early form they must be well trained. G Boyle & Son of the Glen Invitation finish 2nd & 8th Open Ulster Fed, he had 1st, 2nd and 3rd Club and the winner recorded velocity 1754. His first and third arrivals were bred by Jeff Greenaway of the Hills & Maze and the runner-up was bred by his good mate Paddy Elliott. The big lad from the Grosvenor A & A Ferran take 3rd & 9th Open with velocities 1752 and 1741. Tony has been training the youngsters since April, must be working. The Andersonstown team of Robert & Margaret McManus have the top two into the local club and finish 4th & 10th Open doing 1749 and 1739. The Shankill & District winner J O’Boyle is 5th Open on 1747 followed in 6th Open position by the winners in Alexandra Fegan & McAdorey also doing velocity 1747. Mr RVH Billy Carson of Grosvenor is 7th Open doing velocity 1745. Looking down the results I see Jimmy McGann had a great start in Britannia with 1st, 2nd and 3rd, and Rab Fear had the top two in south Belfast followed by novice J Pollins (hope this if the first of many prizes). William McIntyre takes 1st and 2nd in West Belfast and what a result for Frankie Mudd & Sons in East End with the first seven places. In Fortfield the Dream Team have come good at last Peter Martin and Pat Tabb have 1st & 2nd. Staying in Fortfield Raymond Healy had two early arrivals but could not make it to the club as his car was getting re sprayed. He couldn’t phone a taxi as his mobile was smashed after hitting a wall. Just a short note regarding some info I got through the email regarding the Ards partnership of Fulton & Dickson who finished 1st Section F and 28th Open from Lamballe in the O/B National with the NIPA. The pigeon in question a two year old Blue Hen was bred by Harry Fields of Hillfoot not surprising of her success when you see the winning Bloodlines namely Sootjen a bit of the Gilmore & Beattie Line when mated into birds obtained from Billy Lecky a truely winning combination. Sammy would like to thank Harry for this excellent pigeon that as a youngster finished 2nd club Talbenny and as a yearling flew Bude .This year she had 3 races up Ireland and then Talbenny (1) where she was 17th sec F and was sitting 12 days for Lamballe.
