Following the completion of the Cash Awards I presented a Bricon ETS System to Derek Larkin of the Finglas HPS who won the Best Two Bird Average. When Bricon decided to sponsor the system for this race we considered for a while what would be the best way to introduce the prize into the race and we decided that the fancier with the best two bird average with it only being a two bird Nom race and going with the history of Y/Bird racing and your nominated ring numbers having to be in a couple of months ago, we were sure that it was going to be a difficult award to win, with maybe a lot of fanciers losing one of their two birds nominated or indeed both, but to my surprise when you look through the excellent result many fanciers timed both pigeons which is a credit to them and excellent loft management they included Derek Larkin, Terence O'Brien, John Flood, Byrne & Duffy, Bodie & Dobson, C Gibson, Ingle Bros, O Callaghan & Farrell, Byrne & Mooney IHU NFC, McCabe and McCabe. What I like most about the result is even the man in 48th position is getting prize money which is a credit to the organisers. Winning the Bricon sponsored ETS system was Derek Larkin from Finglas who finished 2nd and 4th Open in the race with a combined velocity of 1817.9 ypm. Well done Derek and should you require any assistance with your new system please feel free to contact me. Also had a chance to have a chat with Bill and Gerry O'Mara which was an honour for me having over the last couple of years typed the O'Mara name more time than not every week. Gerry was telling me that the winning pigeon in this particular race was a Blue Pied Hen she was timed at 11.58 flying 175 miles after an 8.15 Liberation. The winning hen finished 3rd Club a fortnight before and was in prime condition for the race that was selected for her at the start of the Y/Bird Campaign. Sire of the pigeon in question is an 05 Pencil Blue Cock gifted from good friend Colin Owens from Finglas, Colin was also present and confirmed that this pigeon was in fact Kees Bosua bought directly from Kees. Not surprising to hear than these pigeons are downing very well just not for Colin but many fanciers that he has supplied in and around the Dublin area.
A couple of months ago I had the pleasure myself in visiting Kee's Bosua along with Ian Gibb of the Gibb & Byrne Stud, during that very informative afternoon I handled all of his top pigeons which was an honour. The Dam of Gerry O'Mara's winner is something special she is a 2006 bred Blue Pied Van Loon which is a cross from two very good fanciers from England namely A Hindhaugh and Hugh Jackson. This paring has already produced two winners this year for Gerry and the Dam herself has now bred 7 x 1st prize winners including a 1st in the Irish South Road Federation. Congratulations to all the winners and more importantly all the participants. Upon leaving I was also very kindly invited along with my good lady to this years prize distribution for the Irish South Road Federation on Saturday 8th of November at the Green Isle Hotel, I am already looking forward to this as it gives me an opportunity to meet many of the leading fanciers currently racing in the South Road Federation and more importantly to give them and the organisations Annual Dinner and Prize Distribution some publicity.
SEASON ALL MOST OVER
Many fanciers will be glad to see the end of the 2008 racing season, with many already locked up and finished for the year. Last weekend caused more misery for many with the weather again up to its usual standards. The NIPA again looking and planning well in advance opted to have the birds competing for the Talbenny Y/Bird National race marked one day earlier on Wednesday evening with the best looking day for a liberation being Friday, this decision was also mirrored to take into effect the comeback race from Tullamore also planned for Friday rather than Saturday hence the basketing at Club level and collections at designated centres throughout the country, on Thursday evening rather than Friday.

Pigeon racing in the last week was yet another experience, with last Friday regarded as the best flying day weather wise arrangements were made to race mark the birds early and go for that day. Talbenny Young Bird Nat birds were race marked on Wednesday at the Cullybackey Centre and the race marking for the inland Tullamore race was also brought forward by one day to Thursday and these birds although marked at the local clubs were moved to the Cullybackey Centre for collection. It was a good entry here with around 70 crates filled for collection and members attending for each club to give a hand with loading etc. That was the easy bit done, Friday turned out not to be the day that was forecast and liberation in Talbenny was not possible. Saturday was no better and with the prospects not good for a liberation in South Wales in the very near future the birds were returned home. It was decided that these birds would be released in Mullingar and clubs could have a race, the NIPA would publish an Open & Sect result, but no points would count for Fancier of the Year etc. The pool monies etc would be returned to each member. We had more poor weather on Sunday early on, especially in the North, release in Mullingar was not possible until 2.15pm in a Westerly wind. The sun was shining and they cleared well. Full results will be available later, those missed will be published next week. Back to Friday and the liberation in Tullamore was at 2.00pm in a helping South wind, it was reported the birds did not clear well an immediate sign of an erratic race. It did turn out as expected, the birds did not like the overcast conditions and we had many big gaps in arrivals and many birds missing at night. A large number of those, many out for the first time, have now returned and the final outcome will not be just as bad as first feared. What a season it has been, the last few weeks have indeed been testing and the big INFC will have to decide what to do about the Blue Riband YB Nat due to be flown from Sennen Cove on 10th September. Jack Millar & Son from Harryville had a very early arrival at 4.37pm to record velocity 1390 for the 124 miles. This Cheq w/f hen one of a kit of six Hartog birds purchased from Louella Pigeon World tops the Mid Antrim Comb and Sect B and will be up near the top of the NIPA. Around Antrim the loft of Amanda Mitchell & Son winners yet again in Muckamore HPS will also be very well placed doing velocity 1347, this bird was out on its own timed at 4.34pm. This loft has been most consistent in Antrim over the last few years, scoring up to 1st Section and 1st Open NIPA.

The weather improved into the late afternoon and early evening and the birds released in Mullingar made light work of the return journey despite the fact they were hampered on the previous Wednesday and had travelled to South Wales for a race that was eventually cancelled. Many results are missing this weekend and we can only feature what we have. Fleming Bros from Crumlin are the best reported in the NIPA Sect B doing velocity 1456 just a yard ahead of Allen McBride who has 1st Harryville HPS and best reported in the Mid Antrim Combine. His Cheq cock was timed at 16.17hrs to record velocity 1455 for the 101 miles into Lettercreeve. Sire was a son of Spartacus the famous Soontjen of Frank Sheader and the dam was a Hartog from Diamonte, she had won from Clonmel and Roscrea.

GALWAY BOUND
This weekend coming my wife Celeste and I will enjoy a long weekend away in Galway, we are travelling down after the restaurant closes on Saturday evening to see the Galway One Loft Race which is due to be flown from Chester on Sunday 7th of September, a distance of 244 miles back to the loft in Tuam. It will be a tuff fly for the small convoy but that’s what a lot of the fancy had in mind when entering the race in the first instance and with the a very good number of the remainder from the north of Ireland the 20,000 Euro 1st prize could very well be heading North. But as I said it will be a very special pigeon that wins this award and one that surely can be called an all out super star, with a small convoy and the Irish Sea to cross then the pigeon has to venture from one side of Ireland to the other, no ordinary pigeon will achieve this and at this stage I would like to wish all the competitors every success in this the final race. Mick Flannery assisted with his wife’s unrelenting help have done an excellent job with this particular one loft race, especially flying and training pigeons into Galway, this in itself is not easy and will without any doubt cast aside very quickly the ones that show any sign of weakness. Then of course Mick had a continual hawk problem and on top of this the weather which has been a complete nightmare didn’t enhance the situation, so considering the loft could have been filled time and time again but this being the first year Mick satisfied himself with 500, plans are already in place for next year with many already booking their perches, if it fills as quick in 2009 as it did in 2008 please take my word for it when the adverts are released have the pen ready for as it was last year it is first come first served. Although Mick was telling me that for 2009 they will bring in venture pigeons for people to purchase and for replacements etc. So for the many that have emailed Mick to say they are coming I look forward to meeting you all their.
UNFORGETTABLE WEEKEND
Locally the Ulster Federation along with the Irish South Road Federation were in Talbenny but they opting to go as normal on Thursday evening but yet again no joy with a liberation, with the weather proving not good enough for a liberation it was decided on Sunday morning to have them brought back to Ireland. The Ulster Federation are hoping for a liberation in Skibbereen on Monday morning with the Irish South Road Fed opting for a liberation again if possible from Rosscarbery As I go to press I can confirm that both organisations liberated on Monday morning at the sites mentioned above both sets of pigeons cleared very well in the South Westerly wind some of the results are listed further down this column. The East Down Combine on the other hand were also in Talbenny being transported with the NIPA they also were brought home and the whole convoy of NIPA and EDC pigeons were liberated on Sunday at 2.15pm in a Westerly Wind from Mullingar with the NIPA opting to produce both a Section and Open result for the race but no points would be allocated for this race towards claims for Section Fancier of the Year, the pool monies etc collected for the Y/B National would be returned to each member. The East Down Combine members also had a convoy of pigeons in Skibbereen for their Y/B Derby. These were liberated on Sunday and with results only starting to come in as I prepare to send this column on for publication early indications are that the magnificent partnership of D Croskery & Son are the winners. Very well done to them. The Irish South Road Federation also had a convoy in Pilmore Beach and these were liberated on Sunday at 12.30pm with good returns reported.
Back to Friday and the liberation of the NIPA pigeons in Tullamore was at 2.00pm in a helping South wind, it was reported the birds did not clear well an immediate sign of an erratic race.
