MAGICAL YEAR FOR RON McKELVEY
What a year for this man Ron McKelvey of Newry has been confirmed as the winner of the Rosscarbery Y/B National with a pigeon that also topped the NIPA from Tullamore earlier in the season.
The NIPA decided again on a Friday race that day having a better forecast, birds on Thursday were collected one hour earlier at the National Marking Centres using four transporters. Birds were released on Friday in Rosscarbery Co Cork at 10.00am in a West wind for the second and final YB National event of the season. Excellent decision once again by the Committee for when you look at the weather since Friday with the exception of Saturday in the north of Ireland it has been at its usual self rain rain and yes more rain. What a year of weather and what a year for Ron McKelvey having finished his year in style flying into Newry he timed his excellent Blue Cock at 2.32pm flying 212 miles recording a velocity of 1372 to win the Rosscarbery Y/B National, personally I have a lot of time for Ron a very dedicated and hard working man just not a Club level but for anybody who needs it. The pigeon timed believe it or not won the NIPA Open this year already and must surely rate now as a very good claim to keep the Massarella RPRA Y/B Award in Northern Ireland this year after Ian Gibb & Sons won it last year with "Champion Kevin". Ron's good Blue Cock topped the mighty NIPA from Tullamore which was one of the biggest liberations this season with 26,833 birds competing sent by 1,024 fanciers that day he recorded a velocity of 1868 ypm. Now on top of that has won 1st Open Rosscarbery Y/Bird National. Sire of this wonderful racer is a pigeon that previously finished 2nd Open for Ron from the Mallow 5 Bird and has amassed a total of 8 x 1st's he was mated to a yearling hen that finished 1st Club 38th Open NIPA Y/B National Rosscarbery last year. Breeding predominatley is as you would expect Brasspenning although he was telling me that when studying the pedigree he came accross a touch of Busschaert on the dams Side namely a pigeon called "Motivator" who was an inspiration when flying in the London Combine. He infact is the G/G Sire on the Mothers side of the pedigree with every other pigeon in the bloodlines pure Brasspenning and what a collection of these Ron McKelvey has. Well done Ron on a truely magical year.

Due to a lack of general interest the NIPA have cancelled the final race which was due to be flown this weekend, that was the decision of the committee and with that the 2008 racing season is complete. Lofts should be making arrangements to make claims for the various awards, Average Cups, Sect Fancier of the Year etc. Same again for Mid Antrim Combine, and I will publish the list next week. This weekend the INFC complete the race programme with the Skibbereen YB Inland Nat to be flown on Saturday 20th September, race marking will be in Lisburn on Thursday between 4.00pm and 8.00pm.
FIVE STAR PERFORMANCE BY BOBBY & FIONA
For yet another week the NIPA changed the collection day until Saturday and the birds were released on Sunday in Fermoy at 10.00am in a North West wind. The race appears to have been good enough with fair enough returns, the longer flying birds getting slower as would be expected. The duplicate 5 Bird Classic was flown at the same time and some lofts were happy enough to record double winners. Bobby and Fiona Stevenson of Dromara have been confirmed as the winners of the 5 Bird Fermoy race winning £241, with the ever consistant Donnelly Bros of Newry in 2nd Open once again. The Dromara Club have had a good year in the 5 Bird events flying with the NIPA for the McKinstry Bros also of the Dromara Club won the O/Bird Mallow 5 Bird this season. Excellent flying by the members of the very competitive Dromara Club.

SKIBBEREEN SUCCESS FOR JOE WARD
Known locally as “The Dermothill Destroyer” Joe Ward races in partnership with his son Joe Jnr flying competitively with the Grosvenor HPS which is affiliated to the Ulster Federation. Now to win the mighty Grosvenor Club any week is some achievement with weekly birdage most weeks looking close to the 1,000 mark especially in Y/Bird racing. I called with Joe on Sunday afternoon after it was confirmed that he had once again won a Derby from Skibbereen flying with the Ulster Federation, this man has proved it time and time again that Skibbereen given a true flying day is his speciality, when the tough get going his small condensed family of pigeons seem to thrive on the conditions that many others find uncomfortable. Having lived and raced in three different locations in a short space of time in pigeon terms it hasn’t been long for him to settle back into winning ways since moving to the Dermothill area of Belfast a couple of years ago. I had a quick look round Joe’s small but immaculate set up, racing a very small team and even less in the stock loft, I personally reckon in another year or two he will have a team of pigeons around him that will be knocking on the door every week regardless on what way the wind is blowing or what the conditions are. The Y/Bird Derby winning Blue Hen named “Martha” was clocked at 3.39pm flying 250 miles and is off his excellent old family line of Busschaerts and FVW going back to the old Bertie Fletcher lines, the hen herself is a G/Daughter of his good Lamballe cock that finished 2nd Open with the Ulster Federation. That particular cock was an awesome racer over the years collecting no less than three T3 Clocks and as many T.V’s. The winning hen was sent to the race sitting on a 7 day old youngster and recorded a winning velocity of 1192ypm. Only last week the Ulster Federation liberated also in Skibbereen for their National Joe won the Club that day also finishing 10th Open in the Federation, that particular Cheq Hen now named “ETS” won around £1,000 in a fortnight including the DTW in the Club. Joe has now subsequently purchased himself an ETS system reference the name of the pigeon. She is a Louis Coorman bred by Rab Hunter of Ballynahinch who is a friend of Joe’s for a long time. She was also the 1st pigeon in the Claire Braniff Memorial race were the Ward loft finished 1st, 3rd and 5th Open. The pigeon that finished 5th Open that day just didn’t win the Grosvenor last week but topped the Federation as well from Mallow this Blue Cock who is named “John Boy” was also this year 2nd Open Kildare and 12th Open Navan. His breeding is one side Rab Hunter this time Willy Jacobs bloodlines and on the other Janssen from his life long friend and companion on race days former Press Officer for the Federation Eric McLaughlin, Joe says some boys keeps leprechauns for good luck he has Eric. Well done Joe on a excellent spell of success, not surprising of course after handling many of your class pigeons. The annual www.pigeonnetwork.com Quiz Night of the Year goes International this year following a very successful weekend during November last year, that particular evening seen some 200 loyal supporters of the above Northern Ireland based web site congregate on Ballyclare Comrades Football Club for a very enjoyable and memorable evening.
This year promises to go one better at the same location on Friday 24th of October, with health racing and breeding systems top of the agenda with regards the members on the Quiz Panel. Firstly we have Guy Van der Auwera of Belgica De Weerd, this company needs no explanatory detail from myself they have been the world leader for many years with regards pigeon health with Guy the man at the helm when Henk is out of the country, which is quite a bit considering they have operations in some 25 countries all over the world with some 50,000 fanciers putting their regular faith in the Success Programme. During the month of July this year I put together a piece of material for the company after a very successful Barcelona Race it read as follows
WINNING WEEKEND FOR BELGICA DE WEERD PRODUCTS
For many years the latter part of June start of July is a period of time that is regarded as the Olympic Games as far as Pigeon Racing is concerned. Regardless of what country or organization you are affiliated to, this time of the year is the one time that many attempt to reach the top of race sheet. On the International/European stage many await with bated breath to see who is going to be The King of the International Barcelona race, a win in a race such as this is respected by fellow fanciers all over the world, equally your name will go into the history books and will be instilled in many fanciers minds for a life time.
Barcelona is the one race that has received world wide acclaim and respect for many years although around Europe there are many equally respected Nationals taking place during the same weekend for instance in Belgium you have St.Vincent Yearlings, Limoges, Argenton and in the Netherlands Montauban, Salbris to name a few. Equally these are as well respected and followed world wide with many fanciers looking to see what strain the winning pigeons are and what system they are operating.
Veterinary Henk De Weerd speaks daily to many fanciers from different areas of the world as well as scores of them from around Belgium and Holland . What Henk enjoys most of all and more importantly what he has always strived to do is maintain customer satisfaction, for this allows for continued custom and successful feed back.
Since the introduction of the Belgica De Weerd Health Programme the Henk De Weerd offices have been inundated with thousands of calls from very satisfied pigeon fanciers who have phoned with news of their racing success. Although nothing had prepared the team from Belgica De Weerd for the news of the exceptional success that had been enjoyed by many of our regular clients during the Olympic National Flying weekend as it is known. For instance:
Danny Vagenende from Smetlede ( Belgium ) winner 1st International Barcelona 2008.
Puck de Jong from Gouda winner 1st National Barcelona 2008 the Netherlands .
Rutz en Zonen from Blieskastel winner 1st, 3rd, 4th National Barcelona 2008 Germany .
Jos de Ridder from Asperen (The Netherlands) earlier this year winner 1st National Blois 2008 and now 1st National NPO Salbris.
Geert Van Hove-Uytterhoeven from Putte ( Belgium ) winner 1st Semi National Argenton 2008.
The above list is only a few of the many fanciers who have phoned the office over the last couple of weeks with news of their excellent racing achievements, Dr Henk De Weerd and his team would like to congratulate all you the fanciers who have enjoyed success over the years especially the many over the last fortnight and we look forward to serving you for many more years to come.
At Belgica De Weerd we have formulated a winning health programme which incorporates a number of our products including B.S. and Belgasol with the purpose to disinfecting them after the race. BelgaTai is one used by many and is effective against upper respiratory problems.
The reasons for the above level of reported success and many other health topics will be able to be discussed on the evening of our quiz night in October. If it is racing idea’s you need then I have the pleasure to welcome two Belgium Super Stars to Ireland for the first time, firstly Geert Van Hove (Uytterhoeven) now many of the elite fanciers who follow the European market will know this man, for he himself is for one an unbelievable racer and an even better breeder, responsible for many national winning pigeons for fanciers all around the world, you will be surprised just what superstars he has been responsible for breeding and how successful his pigeons have been for so many fanciers, you will have to attend the evening in question to find out of course.
We also have an up and coming star again anybody who follows the European stage will know the partnership of Albert & Stefan Steenbergen they have been crowned best Middle Distance Fanciers in Belgium this year, and have had a wonderful few years that have a lot of their competitors taking stock, Lillian Sanderson compiled a loft profile on the Steenbergen partnership not so long ago after yet another 1st National, for those of you looking an insight before the big night the article was published in the Racing Pigeon Pictorial No 456.
If it’s a question you have about breeding then we have the man for you also, Mr Peter Fox of Syndicate Lofts, again first time on a quiz panel, but has a superb reputation of supplying the winning goods all over the world including a few 1st Open pigeons in Northern Ireland. Also received news this week that Dr Henk De Weerd is also going to try and fit in a visit to Ireland for the Quiz night this will take some preparation, given that it will be a last minute situation as he will be in Brazil and South Africa leading up to the quiz night on business. It is his desire to try his complete best to attend the night.
It was around this time last year that the long established and very well supported pigeonnetwork.com web site came onto the market for sale with the current owner now living in Texas, USA and a qualified farrier at that, it wasn’t long before his services were required full time with Texas being one of the highly populated horse areas of America. Ray Delaney originally from Dublin found less and less time to actively work on this pigeon related website, a site that was one of the first of its kind on the market. ‘Homer’ (Willie Reynolds) was asked by Ray Delaney a few years ago to assist with weekly columns and encourage his loyal readership to log on and with all the local Club’s affiliated to various organizations being offered a free Club Site it wasn’t long before the number of viewers started to increase daily. As more and more viewers came on board the pigeonnetwork.com site was gathering huge momentum around the Globe and the unique results data base was gaining more and more Clubs weekly. With all of this in mind and with the loyalty that had been built up between Willie Reynolds and Ray Delaney, the entire Website was offered to “Homer” on a first refusal basis for a discounted rate of £3,000.
Knowing the level of support that the fancy in Ireland were contributing to the web site, Homer thought it too good an opportunity to turn down with a number of other interested parties from around the U.K and indeed even Northern Ireland waiting in the wings to see developments. It was even offered to the NIPA Committee through Homer at the discounted rate such was Homer’s resolve to keep this excellent site within the confines of the country that had and continues to make it one of the well supported pigeon related Websites in the World. The NIPA, although courteous that they were offered the opportunity, decided to stick with their own web site in the meantime as they already had plans in place to modernize and upgrade their own over the coming months.
So Homer assisted with myself decided to purchase the site in August of 2007, we knew very little about web management and design, but Homer was already well used to the outline of the website and was like a lot of the Clubs currently on board self administrating a lot of different areas of the site on a daily basis, although setting up loft profiles, race reports and new created areas of the site would take some time to learn. As part of the package we where able to retain the services of the founder Ray Delaney on a discounted hourly rate to assist along the path of full access of all aspects of the site being controlled by ourselves, I can recall one of the very first stories to go on to the website after the purchase was that of Glen Buckley & Son of Annaghmore, at that stage generally all we were doing was sending a textual document by email with photos attached in jpeg format. Then Ray Delaney would go about setting up a web page and optimizing photos one thing and another to enable the article to be viewed on-line, so their was a great level of the web work at the start being done by Ray. After a few weeks we purchased a high powered Lap Top that had the two necessary programme’s required already installed for us to set up our own web pages consisting of loft profiles and race reports, we also had Ray Delaney himself design and add a number of new areas to the site that we are also able to self admin, including the Pigeon Auction News Area these all being self administered by ourselves greatly reduces our amount of outgoing’s. It is hoped that over the next 12 – 24 months that we will have all areas of the site covered by ourselves, remembering that every penny brought in from various the Quiz Nights and Sales etc goes directly into the future development of pigeonnetwork.com. and to our many supporters and dedicated followers, I thank you for that.
The story so far is I myself, donated £3,000 to purchase this non profit making website on the understanding that all money raised go’s back into the website for future development, including supporting many opportunities that are presented to us for promoting the sport of pigeon racing around the world using the www.pigeonnetwork.com name.
Firstly then a lap top computer had to be purchased with a big enough memory to hold two high powered web required programmes namely ‘Dreamweaver’ and ‘Photoshop’ total cost £1,200. We have since added a second computer that gives us the ability to work at our two different base sites at the same time. Since taking over in August of last year our Web Master Ray Delaney in Texas has been paid $4,986 to date for 142 hours of work. He also has kindly worked on a number of the 31 projects requested for free, a total of 60 hours of the overall total time involved in the projects was unpaid.
Then we have the Web Hosting Company in America to pay a yearly fee to including our Domain Name which combined comes to $300. Also our fund raising night although a ticket event takes a considerable amount of money to put together including air fares, accommodation and meals for our guests. Then of course you have a catering bill for the food that is laid on at the Quiz Night. Also believe it our not the running of the website and answering emails from many fanciers and more importantly non fanciers from all over the world, the continual loft profiles, weekly race reports, and probably the bit that takes the most time is the updating daily of the self admin areas of the site all in all it takes a brave number of hours daily 7 days a week, to assist with this unprecedented level of daily work as mentioned earlier a second smaller and cheaper lap top was purchased for me to have at my paid work to assist with the daily work, all of which we do without pay. In total last year we had 178 paid customers at the Quiz Night totalling £890, the auction of gift birds raised £4,962 and with a couple of donations, a raffle and income from advertising our total income for the year was £6,250. Expenses involving all above have totalled £6,272 so far.
Hopefully with all the major purchases and machinery now in place for the site to grow from strength to strength and with the continued help and support from all of our loyal friends just not in Ireland but all around the World we will continue to do what my father Willie Reynolds started some 36 years ago, and myself 12 years ago, promoting the Sport of Pigeon Racing in Ireland, through paper back publications, with the introduction of the World Wide Web it has opened up our publicity machine far further than we could ever have imagined all those years ago. The fancy in Ireland can be very proud to be part of a pigeon related website that is visited on a daily basis by thousands of fanciers from all over the world and with your continued help and support it will continue to grow in popularity.
Tickets for the above Quiz Night are priced at £5 and include a light buffet, these will like last year be in short supply having moved our Quiz Night one week earlier this year to facilitate a number of fanciers who missed the evening last year due to Club Prize Nights.
