Mid Cheshire

In general, we are never satisfied with the weather here in the UK, as I type these notes up it is so hot outside and I don’t know why the heat here seems different than when we go abroad. It’s not only we humans who suffer the pigeons also feel the effect of the weather and that does show up in the results. The racing pigeon is a game little bird that keeps going no matter what, or at least most keep going. This last weekend has seen the birds that were liberated earlier and had the shorter distance to race doing better with the vels but that is understandable.

The Middlewich FC birds were at Cheltenham with the Mid Cheshire Fed liberated at 9.45am with no wind. The winners plus 11th fed are Peter & Dawn Latham who clocked a yearling on 1561ypm. W Wilson & Son had a good race when they clocked a yearling and two 2yo’s recording vels of 1557/1554ypm and they are 12th 17th & 20th fed where 66 sent 1017 birds. Alan Groom takes the next two positions when he saw home a yearling & 4yo on 1556ypm when two dropped together, they finish 14th & 16th fed.

In the Middlewich 5B race from Frome 11 members sent 101 birds that were liberated at 9.45am in a light south wind. Mark & Heather Smith clocked a 2yo blue cock to collect the red card recording a vel of 1546ypm collecting 8th fed along the way. Alan Woodcock is 2nd club 9th fed on 1542ypm with a dark cock. Mr & Mrs Dudley Niblett are next with a vel of 1527ypm ahead of W Wilson & son 4th on 1524ypm. They are racing with the South West Cheshire Fed where 71 members sent 852 birds; winners this week are Mr & Mrs Carl Rowledge from the Greenbank club on 1564ypm.

We now move on to the Acton Bridge Cheltenham race when 7 sent 147 birds liberated in no wind. The first 4 go to the consistently winning partnership of Curtis-Wall-Lunt. 1st with a yearling cock vel 1619ypm, this cock was their first bird at Bamford Gold Ring race winning approx. £850 his sire is "Cadiz" sire, g-sire of fed & amal winners. His dam is "Sinnita" herself a fed winning daughter of their "Box 9 Pair”. 2nd in the clock is chequer yearling cock also on vel1619ypm. His sire is "485" sire of fed winners x “893” a fed winning daughter, again off their "Box 9 Pair”. 3rd in clock is another yearling cock vel 1618ypm, this one could have topped the fed last week if not for loft mates. He is off "Orlando" sire of fed winners x "Beth" a top breeding daughter of “Alexander” the cock off the “Merlin Pair”. 4th in the clock is another yearling cock vel 1618ypm being a direct son of their "Box 9 Pair”. This yearling cock won 2nd fed as young bird only beat by a very good loft mate.

I was looking at the Cheshire 2B club which is not a bad club and in their Fougeres race 22 members sent 44 birds racing for £777 with 9 members taking a share. The winners are Mark & Heather Smith picking up £80, Mark likes racing in the local specialist races. 2nd is Eric Taylor who is a regular in the prizes wherever he races the pigeons and on this occasion, collects £174. Then come Kenny Burke with the first nom pigeon winning £235. Ron Woodward took the next two positions with £50. Others to collect are K Riley & Son £26. Kevin Tagell £74. John Brocklehurst £25. Roger Sutton £93. Tommy Hulme & Son £20. I do look at this club and wonder if they would be better having a 2B nom out of the NWCC which would allow all entry fees paid out in prizes.
