Mate Mark A called in to collect something and we were talking about pigeons and how their health has deteriorated over the years and what are the reasons why this is happening to our pigeons. Without doubt there is a problem in racing pigeons through over medicating them, which is something that has brought many teams down. Mark was saying that he does not like giving this pigeons anything. At this point he looked at my stocked shelf for the coming season but they are natural products from Bifs that I collected when I was at the Fugare show. I used to change my range of products about every three years but no longer because I have stuck to these natural products that have served me well for so long and my race team doesn’t show the problems that so many other lofts do. Whenever I write about products and what I use I always like to make the point that there are some good ranges out there for use with our racing pigeons and we all have our preference. I am writing about this because this is the time of year when we are putting the final touches to our plans on what and how we are going to give anything to our pigeons for the coming racing season. We should of course have started building them up by now and they should be on their way to a reasonable condition but not yet racing condition, that is unless you are racing towards the end of March. No matter what pigeon products we use, they alone are not going to make the pigeons win - you have to do your bit. What they will do is keep them going that bit longer at a faster rate because you are putting vitamins and tonics into them in the same way that athletes boost their system, legal ones of course. Natural pigeon products are not going to harm your pigeons but antibiotics which are often misused are breaking the pigeons immune system down. As Mark pointed out, good pigeons do not need anything to make them win, they win with their own ability and they are the ones in the clock on a more regular basis. Even though not on a regular basis my race team are now flying out but they have been rooting about in the gutters and around the garden and picked something up because after tests with the vet we have been advised to treat them for cocci. I must admit that since I have been letting them out their droppings have changed considerably so I have booked the chap who cleans the gutters out (bit past it myself doing those jobs now, retirements only a few weeks away) because they have not been touched over winter so a good clean out will do them no harm. When they are properly cleaned out I will get him to tip a good amount of domestos in and then let it gradually get washed away. I am also going to spray the lawn and border with something like Virkon "S" or Fam 30 from the farm shop and also clean the paths and the drive so a busy spell. Elizabeth has been on to me to spray the paths and drive for quite a few weeks but I wanted to get towards the end of March then it will stay cleaner during the summer. I must say that the front does go green on the drive because it does not get very much sunshine on it in the early part of the year because the back of the house faces south. The other thing that I have made my mind up to do is race widowhood so they will no be getting parted because they have been on the eggs for two weeks.
Top Pigeon
Always nice to hear about how others are getting on in their efforts to reach the top. "Dear Les, A bit of info for your news snippets. I've been waiting conformation on my application for a British record which was confirmed last week. My cock GB11Z19177 "CHAMP 77" has been verified as the fastest pigeon ever recorded flying over 600 miles into the United Kingdom covering the distance of 602m 969y in 10hrs 29 mins with a Vel of 1685. The record was set in 1931 by Dr Tresedder and has stood since then. A full report on the story about the cock and the success of the M&D EVANS pigeons in the UK to come in the coming weeks by Keith Mott...pics attached. All the very best Lewis & Angela." Thanks Lewis and well done. I look forward to seeing a full report from Keith.

Must mention that the photos at the Fugare Show were taken by Elizabeth who spent quite a lot of time walking around the show, so thanks for doing that job.
