P&J Jones, 1st Open IHUNFC young bird National winners from Talbenny.

09-09-2016

I was asked by the secretary of the Irish Homing Union NFC if I might be able to give a mention to the winners of their National events, in particular the young bird races that have been taking place recently, having covered the Barlycove young bird race to some extent in my last offering I see no reason not to carry on for the rest of the year, however to be fair to those that raced in the earlier old bird Nationals, I am quite willing to accept information on both the section and open winners of the races that have already taken place from Penzance, Bude, and St Malo. All I ask is that you send in a few details of you and your bird’s performances and maybe a photo or two of same, the details of where to send the info will be at the bottom of the column. With a membership in excess of 450 and growing, it’s only fair that the winners should get some recognition for their efforts.

Paul and Mandy Jones with their son John of Skerries RPC

The winner also second and Seventh, of the most recent IHUNFC race from Talbenny was P&J Jones of the Skerries RPC, and although the partnership consists of Paul and John, this is obviously a family affair as Paul said it would be impossible to compete at the level they do without the vast amount of work put into the birds by wife & mother Mandy, what with Paul on continuous  shift work and young John off at college most of the time, a lot of the loft chores fall to Mandy, and John is indebted to her for all her help.
First bird across the pads to take first open National was a Blue cock on a velocity of 1230ypm, this young cock has been consistent during the year and was bred direct from the partnerships golden couple, the sire, a van Copen from their good friend Mick Myler, the dam is a sister of the partnerships 10 euro cock, bred by Paul & John
In 2008 and raced by Noel Deegan, he is of Hartog breeding through Derek Cummins of Finglas. This pair is also responsible for the partnerships 2015, 3rdOpen Penzance pigeon, also their 2nd & 3rd Open from the corresponding Talbenny young bird race in 2014.

1st Open Talbenny YB national  - 2nd Open Talbenny YB national -  7th Open YB National

The second pigeon over the pads on the same velocity of 1230ypm was their good cheq cock, this one bred from the late Jimmy Roy of Margate in Kent, stock.
The Blue cock placed in seventh Open National is bred off their cock that was 3rd open from Penzance in 2015 and who in turn is a son of the golden couple. This young blue cock that was seventh open was turned around after a day’s rest and sent back to the INFC young bird national from Penzance on the Wednesday, from which he was clocked at 15:22pm on the day of liberation, so its obvious that Paul & John are not afraid to send them when they think they are fit enough for the job in hand.
Paul says that the partnership are really only interested in channel and National racing and they are fortunate to be in a very competitive club, namely Skerries, with some super members amongst them, including National winners last year Paddy Rock & Son, and this years 2nd Open Kings cup winner Art Kelly, along with many others who also mainly concentrate on National racing.
In the past the partnership have won the channel averages with their young birds in the strong East Coast Federation, in fact, only last year, so this is an up to date winning loft that leave no stone unturned when it comes to getting the best out of their channel and National pigeons. To finish, Paul & Family would like to congratulate all those who clocked in the open result and won their respective sections.
Next up we have the final National races on both the north road, which will be held from Mauchline in Scotland and then Barleycove in west Cork to finalise the south road,
Anyone with section or Open winners in either event should get in touch as soon as possible after the event with any information on their birds and their performance, I will be following the results as they come in, and will endeavour to give as much publicity to the winners as I can, so please try and supply the info.
