NEWS FROM SCOTLAND
Reports by Joe Murphy
My kids are always getting on to me because of my poor memory. If you, like me, are worried about 'walking from the kitchen to the bedroom and can't remember why!'... or perhaps 'forgot an old friend's birthday' well, just scroll down and read the following article by Sarah Knapton, correspondent of the Daily Telegraph who wrote, ‘Older people do not decline mentally with age, it just takes them longer to recall facts because they have more information in their brains, scientists believe. Much like a computer struggles as the hard drive gets full up, so too do humans take longer to access information, it has been suggested.
Researchers say this slowing down it is not the same as cognitive decline. “The human brain works slower in old age,” said Dr Michael Ramscar, “but only because we have stored more information over time. “The brains of older people do not get weak. On the contrary, they simply know more.”
SO THERE!! We are all just fine!!!
Who would be a race controller?
This past week, like everyone else, I watched the weather forecasts on the television and it did not look good for pigeon racing. Kevin sent me a text telling me his pigeons were going on Friday and he would only send ONE to keep in the averages. He, like me, did not think for one minute the race would be on: in the end he sent 6 birds, all hens. He phoned me on Saturday morning to say that the birds were liberated at 11.00 at Consett into a south west wind. The weather beside me was full cloud cover and quite dark with no sun whatsoever. I heard about other federations liberating and the weather down into the north east of England was sunshine and quite a good wind and they anticipated a good race. I phoned Kevin about 13.30 and told him the sun was out here in Fife and we had blue sky and it was getting better as the day progressed. He phoned me just after 14.00 hours and told me that he had timed at 14.02 and then had another 2 at 14.05 so half his entry home in 3 minutes. He took the first 3 places in the club, with his first 2 birds bred by Lumsden and Corrigan from Stoneyburn in West Lothian. I don’t know all the ins and outs of their breeding but they originate from Catherine & Geoff Cooper Deweerdt bloodlines. Kevin’s 3rd pigeon beaten on decimals was ‘Lucky’, the good hen who has won 5 times for him this year alone. She has won 1st (by 6 minutes), 4th and now a 3rd club. She has also won 31st open SNFC Maidstone 392 miles against 4855 birds in 2013. Lucky’s sire is ‘Anthony’ bred by Johnstone and Lilleby of Barrow in Furness from their famous ‘40 Cock’ winner of 3 x 1st Combines, 4 x 1st section NWGNFC plus many more prizes. The dam of Lucky is ‘Jenny’ bred by Adrian Duggins from his Leo Van Jijn. Her sire is a son of 1st/14.055bs, 1st/7.467bs. Jenny’s dam Queen 712 is the dam of 1st/17.537bs, 9th/5296bs, 19th/5.249bs, 13th/5.173bs, 13th/2.413bs and 28th/4.502 birds etc. When Kevin phoned me after clock checking he informed me that he had all 6 home. So well done to the race control team on a very good race when everyone thought the birds would be spending a weekend in the race baskets.

Fife Federation
No race this week-end due to the poor weather forecast; I have heard there were a lot of disgruntled fancier’s once they heard that other federations were racing and their birds were not away. However the controller like a lot of people followed the weather forecast and it did not look good for a race at the week end. The other thing people forget is that the race controller does not just think of his own birds in the transporter but he is responsible for ALL the birds including novices as well as established fanciers, so give him and the officials a break.

This week’s photographs
Margaret was going through some old pictures for an album that she is making up and came across these. The first is of my old friend John Ellis of Elphinstone holding one of his ‘superstars’. John, who no longer keeps the pigeons, was an outstanding fancier who created a fantastic family of long distance pigeons that are still winning up to the present time. The second is of young Wattie Forman with the trophies he won in Novar Homing Society a few years back. Wattie is still a member of the club and is also the SNFC clock setter for the Fife region. He has been doing this job for more years than I can remember and we wish him well for the forthcoming national season.

Joe’s Joke
A young girl from Donegal leaves home to find work in the bright lights of London. She comes home 6 months later and steps out of a taxi wearing a full-length mink coat. "Begorrah, Colleen," says her mother, "Tis a lovely soft coat yer wearin' an' it looks so expensive. Where did ye get that?" Colleen replies, "Sure now, I won it at the bingo. Don't they have wonderful prizes in London." When the weekend's over, Colleen returns to the bright lights, but she's back to visit her mum a few months later. This time, when she steps out of the taxi, she's wearing a beautiful gold wristwatch and a large diamond ring. With the usual exchange with mum... "Won it at bingo!" Then Colleen returns to the bright lights again. A few months later, she's back again. And this time she's sporting a beautiful emerald diamond necklace with matching bracelet and earrings. She hands her mother £1,000 and explains that she won it all in bingo. Then she asks mum to run her a bath as she need to freshen up. Her mum draws the bath while Colleen gets undressed in her bedroom, but when she gets to the washroom, there's only a quarter inch of hot water in the bathtub. Colleen, a wee bit peeved at her mum being so cheap with the hot water after being handed £1,000, calls downstairs, "Mum! Sure now didn't I ask you to run me a bath? There's only a quarter inch of water in the tub!" "Indade there is, me darlin" replies her mum. "But we don't want ye gettin' yer bingo card wet now, do we?"
And here's another joke...
Shortly after a British Airways flight had reached its cruising altitude, the captain announced: 'Ladies and Gentlemen, this is your Captain. Welcome to Flight 293, non-stop from London Heathrow to Toronto. The weather ahead is good, so we should have a smooth uneventful flight. So sit back, relax and..... OH, MY GOD!’ Silence followed! Some moments later the captain came back on the intercom. 'Ladies and gentlemen, I'm sorry if I scared you. While I was talking to you, a flight attendant accidentally spilled a cup of hot coffee in my lap. You should see the front of my pants!' One Irish passenger yelled.... 'For God's sake... you should see the back of mine!!!'
