NEWS FROM SCOTLAND

Reports by Joe Murphy

Joe Murphy showing Steve Bruce a pigeon

Firstly I would like to thank all the people who have sent in their club or federation results throughout the year. I know more than anyone how hard it is to get information from people on their birds and by the way it is ‘They’ who get the publicity not the press officers. However I do appreciate all the hard work, time and effort that each of these people has put in and they are indeed a credit to each of their organisation they represent. In 2 years it will be 50 years since I first started writing for the BHW and at that time everything was hand written and you had to post it off in plenty of time to get to Welshpool. When I covered the Scottish National races I would work ALL weekend gathering information on the winners and the lovely Linda Richards would come back into the office on a Monday night, phone me and I dictated all the information gathered to her and she typed this out so that it would make the following weekend’s paper. It is changed now as I type my weekly column and can send it away by email and it is in the main office within seconds. Don’t get me wrong, at times it is hard trying to keep a weekly article going, however as long as I’m able then I will continue as we have lost over the years some GREAT scribes for example: ‘Observer from Greenock’, ‘Jim Renwick from Central Scotland’, ‘CSO Howie from Perth and Fife’, ‘Jim Paterson from Ayrshire’, ‘John Swinburne from Lanarkshire’, ‘Bob Hunter from the North West federation’ and last but not least ‘Round O’ who did a wonderful job in publicising the Scottish pigeon sport. So you will see we were well covered in gone by days however ‘Round O’ and I both felt that Scotland did not get the publicity it deserves and this was down to fanciers’ ‘cannot be bothered’ attitude.  I would also like to THANK the ‘Girls’ of the BHW staff who work hard throughout the year making sure we get our paper out on time I have included a photo of the well done ‘girls’ and Steve and Colin our editors. I have also added a photograph of yours truly showing Hull City football manager Steve Bruce a Deweerdt pigeon that I bought home from Blackpool. Steve told me that his father or grandfather was a great pigeon enthusiast.

BICC Moot

Received an email from my good friend Russell Bradford from Wellingborough who wrote ‘Hi Joe, knowing that you and Kevin are coming down to the BICC Moot and the Epsom show at the end of October, I thought I’d let you know the good news that Dr Henk De Weerd the world renowned Vet has now confirmed his attendance. Obviously really good news as it will add a further dimension to an already stunning line-up of guests on the panel. As of today (5th of September) 124 tickets have been sold and with still some 7 to 8 weeks to the event and I have no doubt the remaining 75 or so will go within the next few weeks. Already the audience alone is looking like a “Who’s Who” of the pigeon world, and although I thought it would be well attended, I am still surprised as to how far afield requests for tickets have come from. I thought perhaps you might be the furthest travelling from Scotland, but tickets have gone out to Dublin; North and South Wales; Yorkshire, Lancashire and Devon & Cornwall. It certainly has the promise of an excellent weekend as apart from the Moot on the Friday evening, I am told by Tom Firmager one of the show organisers that this year’s show is bigger and better than ever with some 57 stands now booked. Look forward to meeting up with you and Kevin yours Russell’.

Joe’s Jokes

Several centuries ago, the Pope decreed that all the Jews had to convert to Catholicism or leave Italy.  There was a huge outcry from the Jewish community, so the Pope offered a deal: he'd have a religious debate with the leader of the Jewish community.  If the Jews won, they could stay in Italy; if the Pope won, they'd have to convert or leave. The Jewish people met and picked an aged and wise Rabbi to represent them in the debate. However, as the Rabbi spoke no Italian, and the Pope spoke no Yiddish, they agreed that it would be a 'silent' debate. On the chosen day the Pope and the Rabbi sat opposite each other.
The Pope raised his hand and showed three fingers. The Rabbi looked back and raised one finger. Next, the Pope waved his finger around his head. The Rabbi pointed to the ground where he sat. The Pope brought out a communion wafer and a chalice of wine. The Rabbi pulled out an apple. With that, the Pope stood up and declared himself beaten and said that the Rabbi was too clever.  The Jews could stay in Italy. Later the cardinals met with the Pope and asked him what had happened. The Pope said, 'First I held up three fingers to represent the Trinity. He responded by holding up a single finger to remind me there is still only one God common to both our beliefs.  Then, I waved my finger around my head to show him that God was all around us.  The Rabbi responded by pointing to the ground to show that God was also right here with us.  I pulled out the wine and wafer to show that God absolves us of all our sins, and the Rabbi pulled out an apple to remind me of the original sin.  He defeated me at every move and I could not continue.'
Meanwhile, the Jewish community gathered to ask the Rabbi how he'd won. 'I haven't a clue,' said the rabbi. 'First, he told me that we had three days to get out of Italy, so I gave him the finger.  Then he tells me that the whole country would be cleared of Jews and I told him that we were staying right here. 'And then what?' asked a woman. 'Who knows?' said the Rabbi. 'He took out his lunch so I took out mine.

The Baptist Church Dinner!

A group of couples from the Butthole Southern Baptist Church used to get together on a regular basis, socialize, and play games and the lady of the house was expected to prepare the meal.  When it came time for Al and Janet to be the hosts, Janet wanted to outdo all the others. She decided to have mushroom-smothered steak. But mushrooms are expensive.  She then told her husband, "No mushrooms.  They cost too much."  He said, "Why don't you go down in the pasture and pick some of those mushrooms?  There are plenty in the creek bed."  She said, "No, some wild mushrooms are poison."  He said, "Well, I see varmints eating them and they're OK."  So Janet decided to give it a try.  She picked a bunch, washed, sliced, and diced them for her smothered steak.  Then she went out on the back porch and gave Ol' Spot (the yard dog) a double handful. Ol' Spot ate every bite.  All morning long, Janet watched Ol' Spot and the wild mushrooms didn't seem to affect him, so she decided to use them.  The meal was a great success, and Janet even hired a helper lady from town to help her serve. After everyone had finished, they relaxed, and socialized, about then, the helper lady came in and whispered in Janet's ear……… said, "Mrs. Williams, Ol' Spot is dead."  Janet went into hysterics.  After she finally calmed down, she called the doctor and told him what had happened. The doctor said, "That's bad, but I think we can take care of it.  I will call for an ambulance and I will be there as quickly as possible.  We'll give everyone enemas and we will pump out everyone's stomach. Everything will be fine.  Just keep them calm."  Soon they could hear the siren as the ambulance was coming down the road. The EMTs and the doctor had their suitcases, syringes, and a stomach pump. One by one, they took each person into the bathroom, gave them an enema, and pumped out their stomach. After the last one was finished, the doctor came out and said, "I think everything will be fine now," and he left.  They were all looking pretty weak sitting around the living room and about this time the helper lady came in and whispered to Janet, -- "You know, that fellow what run over Ol' Spot never even stopped his car."
