NEWS FROM SCOTLAND

Reports by Joe Murphy

There is not much happening in the pigeon sport just now as the birds are going through the moult and it is all quiet on the western front, so much so that we thought the phone had been cut off as it had not rang for so long. However Margaret and I are having a weekend together watching the Ryder Cup on TV. For 2 people who do not play golf this is one tournament that we thoroughly enjoy and the competitiveness to win is stupendous and like a lot of other people we were hoping that Europe could pull it off once again.

So with no movement in the pigeon sport I intend to highlight good pigeons that have done well in the national races in 2014 starting with my dear friend Bernard Deweerdt from Kortemark in Belgium who I was speaking to last week. He has kindly forwarded me a couple of photographs that I can add to the column. The first is one of his remarkable chequer hen ‘PINA’ that so far has scored 100% from 6 international races, amongst these 5 very long distance races and she has always arrived on the day. However this year from Pau she was clocked the following morning when Bernard woke to find her at the loft and noticed plenty of droppings as evidence of her arrival late the previous evening. She must have arrived after Bernard stopped watching for birds at the end of official closing time. He admits that due to this mishap she lost approximately 10 positions however she has proved without doubt that she is a quality pigeon. Bernard has only put down her positions in the Hens’ national however I have highlighted ALL her performance wins at national and international races along with the birdage to give reader a fuller insight into this good hen’s performances.

2012: Perpignan she won 303rd hens from 3849 birds.

2013: Pau she won 26th hens 2112 birds, 45th national 2025 birds; 229th international 8576 birds.

2013: Agen she won 243rd hens from 3113 birds; 1061st national 5507 birds; 2217th international 12.942 birds.

2013: Perpignan she won 136th hens from 3049 birds; 440th national 5613 birds; 917th international 15.106 birds.

2014: Pau she won 41st hens 2062 birds; 55th national 1910 birds; 325th international 8.295 birds.

2014; Perpignan she won 99th hens 3876 birds; 397th national 6248 birds; 808th international 17.971 birds.

Her sire is ‘Riban’ a full brother to ‘Iban’ who won 1st providence 1259 birds; 4th national & 10th international Perpignan 17.570 birds. He also won 57th international Dax 19420 birds; 179th national Bordeaux 7.490 birds; 616th international Dax 17.625 birds; 39th national 7.611 birds and 153rd international Perpignan 17.653 birds. Their sister ‘Joan’ won 9th international hens 3.934 birds & 47th national 7537 birds Perpignan and 1st providence 1.936 birds, 4th national 12.998 birds and 10th international 25.815 birds Barcelona. While PINA's dam is ‘Ritz’ winner of 1st Club Biarritz in 2005 she in turn is the grandmother of ‘Favori’ who won 1st club Marseille in 2013.

SNFC Winners

I have been studying the SNFC results and there are some outstanding pigeons raced by the members and I intend to highlight some of these every week during the winter months. However if you have a pigeon that has done well during the season and have a photograph of the pigeon then please send it in and if you wish you can give me some information on its breeding and I will use this detail to highlight the birds details. I start off with two father and son partnerships that have done well in 2014.

Obituary

Margaret (Mags) Young from Danderhall in Edinburgh wife of Tam who raced in the local racing pigeon club as J & T Young. Mags was a ‘gem’ of a lady who was a friend to all and she was highly respected by all who visited their house. Mags had not been too well of late and bore her illness with great dignity and at the tender age of early 50s she has lost her battle against her illness. To Tam, their children and grandchildren we send our heartfelt condolences at this sad time.

Joe’s Jokes

This actually happened in an Australian court A lady about 8 months pregnant got on a bus. She noticed the man opposite her was smiling at her and she immediately moved to another seat. This time the smile turned into a grin, so she moved again and the man seemed more amused.  When on the fourth move, the man burst out laughing, she complained to the driver and he had the man arrested. The case came up in court and the judge asked the man (about 20 years old) what he had to say for himself. The man replied, 'well your honour, it was like this: When the lady got on the bus, I couldn't help but notice her condition. She sat down under a sign that said, 'The double mint twins are coming' and I grinned. Then she moved and sat under a sign that said, 'Logan's liniment will reduce the swelling,' and I had to smile. Then she placed herself under a deodorant sign that said, 'William's big stick did the trick,' and I could hardly contain myself. But, your honour, when she moved the fourth time and sat under a sign that said, 'Goodyear rubber could have prevented this accident!’... I just lost it.' 'Case dismissed!!'

and...

"You never surprise me" a woman moaned one day to her long suffering husband. "Buy me a surprise for my birthday, something that can accelerate from 0 to 150 in under 4 seconds ... and I'd prefer a blue one!” she hinted. Happy and excited she was counting down the days for her birthday, and finally she got the beautiful present her husband had thoughtfully chosen for her... He's dead now... but he died a legend.
