Willie and Barry with Joe Murphy (R)
Having studied this year’s national results one name that kept catching my eye was Willie Kinnear & son Barry of Danderhall in Edinburgh. They had an outstanding season winning the following positions in the top 100 open places in the SNFC races: From Buckingham flying 284 miles from an entry of 2941 birds they won 99th open, then from Maidstone with 4472 birds in the convoy they won 30th, 33rd & 37th open racing from 359 miles. From the Gold Cup race from Alencon with an entry of 1427 birds they were flying a distance of 534 miles and they won 11th, 65th & 73rd open. From Ypres against 2404 birds and racing a distance of 430 miles they won 26th, 36th & 47th open. From the last old bird national from Clermont the entry was 1169 birds and the Kinnears were flying 509 miles and won 24th open then from the young bird national from Buckingham the convoy was 1552 birds and their distance was 284 miles and they won 8th, 21st, 61st & 96th open. From the young bird national flown from Buckingham a distance of 284 miles they won 8th 21st 61st 96th 130th & 152nd open from an entry of 1552 birds. So I hope you will agree they had a very good season and these are not including positions won in the strong Pentland Hills Federation where I know that they even won the Christmas race last year. I contacted Barry to see if he could give me some photographs and details of the breeding of the pigeons that I had picked out to highlight in this article and was shocked to find out that his dad Willie had taken a stroke at the beginning of the year and was now in a nursing home. Barry informed me that he had brought Willie home for some of the national races to watch for the pigeons coming home and I thought that this was a fantastic gesture by this young man. Before we look at some of their current top performers, I'll first present four key pigeons within the family.

Before I go on further about the Kinnear pigeons and their performances every member of the SNFC can have the same amount of publicity if they are prepared to give me the details of their birds’ breeding and if you have pictures all the better. I can obtain the birds’ performances from the year books and the national web site however details of each bird’s breeding I’m afraid I do not know. It is up to you the members to assist me with this information and I will endeavour to highlight your ‘Champion’.
Now for some information on their winning pigeons and I have highlighted the performances of some of the family’s top pigeons in their pedigrees. Firstly let me highlight an important fact for readers; firstly many years ago Edinburgh was known as ‘Auld Reekie’ because of the stench that came from the industrial chimneys within the city. With the Kinnears living in the outskirts of the city they called their family of birds ‘Reekie’ after Scotland’s capital city. We start off with:
Blue Bar Cock SU 11 P 3068 named ‘Ypres Reekie’ he has won the following positions:

Sire is a son of ‘Auld Reekie’ who won 1st, 2nd, 11th & 24th open SNFC races winning over £11.000 (he should have been a double national winner but I will not go into the reasons why as this is a sore point with me). ‘Auld Reekie’ was also the SHU Dewar Trophy winner in 2004 & 2005 and he is a double grandson of the Kinnear’s great pigeon ‘Back to Basic’s’ who also won an SNFC Gold Award in 1996 winning 66th & 126th open Rennes, 2nd, 41st & 106th open Sartilly.
Dam of Ypres Reekie was a daughter of Dale Newcombe’s Gold award winner ‘Kardale Style’ when paired to ‘Kardale Aero’. The sire of ‘Kardale Style’ was a direct son of ‘Fortune Lady’ the only double SNFC Gold Award Winner in the history of the SNFC. The dam of ‘Kardale Style’ was a full sister to John Ellis of Elphinstone’s ‘Lothian Lass’ also a SNFC Gold Award winner. So you will see pigeons bred in the ‘purple’ and who says that breeding does not count! As a matter of interest ‘Ypres Reekie’ is a full brother to ‘Young Reekie’ winner of 1st open SNFC Ypres 1243 birds in 2009.

Sire A grandson of ‘Auld Reekie’.
Dam A daughter of Willie & Jock Strang & son Tyrone of California’s great SNFC Gold Award winning hen ‘California Star’ when she was paired to a son of ‘Auld Reekie’. ‘California Star’ was an outstanding pigeon as she won from 5 different race points into Scotland to win her Gold Award in the SNFC, these being as follows: 13th section D 76th open Alencon 545 miles; 10th section D 105th open Falaise 516 miles; 1st section D 8th open Tours 623 miles; 3rd section D 57th open Andrezel 579 miles; 2nd section D 12th open Bourges 650 miles when only 22 birds made the open result. ‘California Star’ also won a prize with the Scottish Central Combine from France. Her sire was a son of ‘Fallahill Superstar’ winner of 1st open SNFC Rennes for Eddie Callaghan from Fauldhouse; while the dam of ‘California Star’ was from a Jock Reid cock when paired to a ‘Fallahill’ hen. ‘California Star’ was also an exceptional breeder as a son from her won 7th section D 90th open SNFC Falaise and 3rd section D 87th open SNFC Alencon. Again readers will see that only the best of long distance breeding is in all these pigeons.

My thanks to Barry Kinnear for all his assistance in supplying me with photographs and the breeding of the above birds as it makes for more interesting reading. I wish the Kinnear family all the very best for the future with their health and also with their fantastic team of pigeons.
Joe’s Jokes
Like many of you we were square eyed watching the Ryder Cup on the TV but it was a wonderful weekend and one we really enjoyed. So it is very fitting that this week’s joke is for golfers enjoy.
Ed and Nancy met while on a singles cruise and Ed fell head over heels for her. When they discovered they lived in the same city only a few miles apart Ed was ecstatic. He immediately started asking her out when they got home. Within a couple of weeks, Ed had taken Nancy to dance clubs, restaurants, concerts, movies, and museums. Ed became convinced that Nancy was indeed his soul mate and true love. Every date seemed better than the last. On the one-month anniversary of their first dinner on the cruise ship, Ed took Nancy to a fine restaurant. While having cocktails and waiting for their salad, Ed said, "I guess you can tell I'm very much in love with you. I'd like a little serious talk before our relationship continues to the next stage. So, before I get a box out of my jacket and ask you a life changing question, it's only fair to warn you, I'm a total golf nut. I play golf; I read about golf, I watch golf on TV. In short, I eat, sleep, and breathe golf. If that's going to be a problem for us, you'd better say so now!" Nancy took a deep breath and responded, "Ed that certainly won't be a problem. I love you as you are and I love golf too; but, since we're being totally honest with each other, you need to know that for the last five years I've been a hooker." Ed said, "I bet it's because you're not keeping your wrists straight when you hit the ball.
and another one...
A bloke goes to his doctor’s and said he wants castrating. The doctor said ‘Have you given this a lot of thought?’ The bloke replies, ‘Yes it is what I want’. So an appointment was made and he attended the hospital and was castrated. When he came round and sat up in the bed he turned to the lad in the bed next to him and said, ‘What are you in for?’ The lad said ‘Oh I’ve been circumcised’. ‘Oh shit, that’s the word’ says the bloke.
