The Joe Murphy Column
It is quite funny to be writing this article for the 8th January2016 and it is only the 9th of December but the pigeon papers require all the information in plenty of time so that they can print them prior to the Christmas holiday period, so a busy time for the staff at both papers.
Blackpool Show
As I said previously I’m not going to travel down to the show this year as I don’t think it would be much fun going about on 2 crutches and to be honest my knee is giving me ‘jip’ just now with all this damp weather we are having just now. So I’m going to see if a friend will take my pigeon down for the Charity Auction. I have named this young red cock ‘The Murphy Cock’ he was bred for stock and contains the very best of Bernard DeWeerdt bloodlines. In fact when I told Bernard what I was presenting to the charity sale he said ‘Lucky the man who purchased this well-bred pigeon’. The sire of the ‘Murphy Cock’ was bred direct in Kortemark and I called him ‘Bernard’ he is a direct son of ‘CLOVIS’ Bernard’s most consistent racing cock who won 8 times in national and international races; his performances are as follows:

Good SNFC Birds
This week I cover a very good pigeon for J & J Hunt of Dundee with their chequer cock SU10DF 3159 who won 7 times in the SNFC races and won a SNFC Silver Award in 2015. Unfortunately this cock was killed by a hawk from a training flight from Freuchie in Fife prior to the 2015 season. As a yearling in 2011 he won 112th section C from Eastbourne a distance of 422 miles, then as a 2 year old he won 12th section C 35th open Maidstone a distance of 397 miles and was then sent to the Clermont race point and won 46th section C 79th open flying 545 miles. In 2013 he won 20th section C 175th open from Newbury a distance of 362 miles, he then went to Maidstone a distance of 397 miles and won 63rd section C 198th open and was then entered for the last old bird race of that season from Clermont and won 12th section C 36th open flying 545 miles. Then in 2015 he won 15th section C 107th open from Alencon a distance of 575 miles. A truly wonderful cock that did so well in his racing career; and it was a bitter blow when he was the only bird to not return from that fatal training flight. Knowing Joe he will come back with another ‘star’ so keep your eyes on the national result for J & J Hunt of Dundee.
I have covered ALL the birds who won Bronze; Silver and Gold Awards at the SNFC presentation in 2015. However I know from studying the national results there are other very good pigeons that have achieved good results over the past few years and I will try to cover as many of these as possible over the next few months.
Joe’s Joke
A priest was being honoured at his retirement dinner after 25 years in the parish. A leading local politician and member of the congregation were chosen to make the presentation and to give a little speech at the dinner. However, he was delayed, so the priest decided to say his own few words whilst they waited. ‘I got my first impression of this parish from the first confession I heard here. I thought I had been assigned to a terrible place. The very first person who entered the confessional told me he had stolen a TV and when questioned by the police, was able to lie his way out of it. He had stolen money from his parents, embezzled from his employer; had an affair with the boss’s wife; had frequent sex with the boss’s daughter; taken illegal drugs; and was arrested several times for public nudity and indecent exposure. I was appalled that one person could do so many awful things. But as the days went on, I learnt that my people were not all like that and I had, indeed, come to a fine parish full of loving people’.
Just as the priest finished his talk, the politician arrived full of apologies at being late. He immediately began to make the presentation and gave his talk. ‘I’ll never forget the first day our parish Priest arrived’ said the politician. ‘In fact, I had the honour of being the first person to go to him for confession’.
Moral of this story --- Never, never be late for a function.
