THE MAIN MOULT

by Jim Emerton

Ecdysis is a natural process in healthy pigeons. Some feathers may fall at intervals in the year. The main moulting period is stressful to a racing pigeon and it requires support. In September and October in the UK, birds - often latebreds - may succumb to invasive diseases, since the immune system is threatened and compromised. I advocate baths with salts to ease the situation, and highly nutritious foods rich in fats and proteins to around 16 percent protein level. Make the diet varied and composite and use supplements like Hormoform and extra G10 pellets. It is an art/science fusion, with no definitive/exact formula for success as birds may thrive on various diets. Extra vitamins/probiotics and amino acids like methionine will help optimise the feeding regime. To raise natural immunity levels in the flock reduce environmental stress, and allow free exercise in the big outdoors to echo the superb condition attained by wild doves and pigeons. An experienced distance pigeon may shed its end flights in the January of the following year. By November the birds should pulse and shine with energy and vitality. Any late breeding will delay the moult - we always take latebreds from the key racers. A perfect moult may be conducive to good results in the following season. On a psychological note I like quiet, contented rest for the birds in harmonious surroundings.
