GWENT GREATER DISTANCE CLUB

Report by Gareth Watkins

The club held its latest meeting at the club H.Q. recently and a number of points were raised. Most importantly, the club now has a new mini-transporter, kindly donated by Mrs Ingram, the wife of the late Tommy Ingram who sadly passed away just before Christmas. This will be modified to accommodate the BICC crates should we be granted a marking station in Newport. The transporter will also be used throughout the season, for mid-week training from the south coast for club members. So, for a fiver, members will be able to train their birds from Weymouth and Portsmouth in preparation for the channel races organised by the BICC and Welsh SRNFC.

Dennis Ford and family.

Once again the club hopes to organise a channel race programme in conjunction with the BICC and Welsh SRNFC and, hopefully, we will have a full channel programme incorporating a number of short/ middle distance races plus Pau/Tarbes, Perpignan, Barcelona, Marseilles and possibly Bergerac and Saintes. At the moment there will be two young bird races, one organised by the BICC and the other by the Welsh SRNFC. In 2007 the two y,b. races were from Guernsey.

The AGM of the club will take place at the Ebbw Bridge club, Cardiff Road, Newport at 1 p.m. on Sunday 3rd February. New members are welcome and the annual fees are £60, £50 of which is allocated to prize money and the other £10 for administrative purposes. Fanciers wishing to join for young birds only will pay a fee of £25. The more members we have the more the prize money pot will grow and the more races we can cover with prize money. In 2007 this was something like £85 per race. Add to this pools and noms to £5 and the winners were very often walking away with over £100. If all the fanciers who have shown an interest do actually become members we will have to have Securicor present on the presentation night!
