GWENT GREATER DISTANCE CLUB

THE FIRST AND ONLY DEDICATED INTERNATIONAL FLYING CLUB IN WALES

It is now my second year as Secretary of The Gwent Greater Distance Club and for a relative newcomer to the sport I cannot express how much I value being a member of this great forward looking club. Whenever we get together you can rely on your questions being answered, problems solved and guidance always given freely.  Members include such legends of today in the Welsh Racing Pigeon fancy as Adrian Ware, Spencer Jones, Dennis Ford, Jim Hooper, Ray Strawbridge, Gareth Watkins, Padfield Family, Wilf Reed, Preece Bros and Sons and many more to whom I  send my apologies for omitting. We have in total amongst our membership the winners of no less than 70 x 1st in Welsh National races plus six or more Queen’s Cup winners and three 1st open BICC National winners, so you can imagine that competition is of the very highest level. The Club motto is “Only the Brave” and when you see such quality pigeons being sent not just to one, but more often two and even three of the 500, 600, or 700 races in one season and again the following year, you can appreciate why the club motto is so appropriate for these brave pigeons. If it is long distance racing you want, then this is the only club in Wales that is dedicated to Long Distance International Pigeon Racing.

For the 2010 season our membership has passed the 40 member mark and we are beginning to consider our capacity for new members, a wonderful position for any club to be in. However, as a club we have agreed to invite new membership for 2010 and hopefully reach 50 members.

Our race programme for 2010 is predominately BICC races both Nationals and Internationals with three of the Welsh South Road races from Saintes and Bergerac for the Old Birds and Lessay/Vire for the Young Birds are also included. Twelve races in all.
