ACROSS THE MIDDLE
by Gordon Braban & John Wilkie
Eastbourne - May 2014
Hello and welcome back. What a month we are having. May should be starting to get hotter and hotter, as they say never cast a clout till May’s out, and that's just about right. A couple of days of hot weather and we think summer is here, and that's about it, on with the winter gear again. Well we can only blame the big man upstairs. It is the middle of May and the combine have only had 3 races, what with putting back races and calling them off, but we will just have to put up with the climate change and the strange seasons.
This week the Up North Combine were going to Eastbourne for their first of 3 inland nationals. Leading up to the weekend the weather had been a bit iffy, so the delegates along with the rest of the NEHU delegates decided to put the race back. We were supposed to be going away on the Friday, but did not start baskketing till the Sunday. The weather forecast for the Sunday was for it to rain in the morning and get out later on {well that was all wrong again, wasn't it!}. The birdage for this National was a lot down on years gone by. I guess that's due to people that have to go to work, not sending. The forecast for Monday 12th was not that much better than it had been over the past few days, but at least the birds were away, and now it was just sit tight and wait till word came that they would be up or not {not this day - holdover again}. So along came Tuesday {a lot better} and the birds were liberated at 7-10 in a west wind, so the race was on. It was just a matter of how long it would take and where the combine winner would be. The day was pretty much the same as last year’s race, which proved a good day for the lads up in the middle of the combine but that's a story for later on, so let’s get on with the story at hand.

SECTION 4
Like I said at the beginning of my report, this race was nearly the same as last year’s but the positions were a little different. This year’s winner was the loft of R & A Evans, Dixon, Gibbon & Smith {that's a mouth full}, yes with their first UNC win since being formed. They have had many near misses but in the end they did it so well done lads. Last year these were 2nd combine out of this race to the Woodroffe bros. The bros took 3rd combine this year just missing out on a very close finish.

Well that's just about it for the first of the UNC nationals. Most of the fanciers around the area got most of their birds back on the day with only a few birds being reported missing. Let’s hope that they return home soon. Like I said in 1 of my early reports, if I don't get information on the birds I can not put colours, sexes and ages on my report, so try and help me out please. Next week the combine will be at Melton Mowbray, so I will try and get full reports in for the article with your help. Call me on 0191 4177745 or 07526267979 or email me at
