ESSEX & KENT AMALGAMATION

E. J. SAINS

Scotch Corner - May 20th 2012

Due to strong East North East winds that were freezing in nature combined with overcast skies, periods of heavy rain down to drizzle as you went further south, there was no alternative but to holdover on Saturday 19th May. Early on Sunday morning, conditions were easing with the last rain belts slowly moving away East South East. 1605 birds were finally liberated at 9am into a light North East wind. The race still proved to be a sticky one, with the birds having to contend with the East winds and the stress off the holdover. They nevertheless still made good time, arriving home in the 1500s.

This race is one of the new amalgamation races that have been voted in to be raced in 2012. Unfortunately not all the federations have been able to compete. This and the threat of a holdover or worse meant the birdage suffered. This is an opportune moment to mention that on behalf of all the amalgamation members I would like to thank the federation representatives that collect the information and help organise the photographs that go towards forming these articles. These representatives are:

Mr Bob Fenech. County of Essex federation.

Mr E. J. Sains. Essex Central federation.

Mr Bill Clark. Havering federation.

Mr Steve Smith & Bernie McDermott. South of the Thames federation

Mr Lee Fribbins. Stour Valley federation

Mr Bob Scott. West Essex federation.

Mr Paul Liman. First open County of Essex Federation. First open Essex & Kent Amalgamation 10605 birds velocity 1592 ypm.

Paul Liman has been a member of Chigwell HS since starting his racing pigeon career just four years ago. He has achieved some great results so far in this well established club. Chigwell may only have a few members, but all are very credible fliers so to achieve within the club is a feat in itself. The club has already had an Amal winner this year. In 2010 Paul achieved many 1st clubs and Fed positions, a 5th Combine and 3rd/7th and 8th Amal. In 2011 Paul had more great results but couldn’t reach the top spot in the Amalgamation. Paul is very pleased with his success in his short time at the sport and appreciates the help and advice he has received from his good friends Mr J. Patterson and J. Greenaway and he always remembers John's number one bit of advice: ''You only get out what you put in boy''.

The Pigeon (origin)

He topped the Amalgamation with his 3yr old blue widowhood cock Sonic, a Janssen x Hofkens which he bred himself. It has previously achieved 2 x 1st club and 5th and 7th federations. The nest mate to this pigeon is one of Paul's best, already achieving 5x1sts clubs, 1st Fed plus 5th  Combine from 2856 birds and 2nd Amal from 2831 birds and many more positions.

Mr L.  J. Stock. Winner of First open Havering federation. Seventh open Essex & Kent Amalgamation.

Les Stock, who flies in the Hornchurch & District R.P.S., needs no introduction as he has already achieved notoriety being a past London North Road Combine winner.

The Pigeon (origin)

Les’s bird, a two year old chequer pied widowhood cock, had been showing a lot of promise prior to the race. His parents originate from pigeons purchased direct from Geoff Kirkland in 1998. Les felt his entry had performed very well, and he had 12 birds out of 18 on a very testing day.

T & T McCarthy. Winners of First Open South of the Thames Federation. Third Open Essex & Kent Amalgamation velocity 1589 ypm.

The Pigeon (origin)

Terry & Tina’s bird is a yearling grizzle Silver Bullet Van Loon x Ries Gerrard Shalywack Janssen cock. He scored well in the federation as a baby. He is also the nest mate to this year’s South of the Thames open race winner.
