K & B McConaghie & son win Talbenny for a 4th time in 5years & Harper & Young are 1st open Thurles 2
The East Down Combine had two races underway on the week end of 26th August the 2nd race from Thurles & the Cross channel YB Derby from Talbenny and this Derby was again won by Geoff McConaghie and before looking at the results of these ,apologies for the late submission of this report and also next weeks of the two Skibbereen Derbies ,as I was off on my travels abroad .
Let me start with the 2nd Thurles race which was the last race before the various Derby events and saw the birds liberated at 10.45am into a light Westerly wind and once again it was Cloughey which dominated with the partnership of Drew Harper & Martin Young taking the top five places in the open and Section with birds coming into the loft one after another ,this was followed by 8 birds to Gordon Bros & sons then one into Portavogie to Jim & Ronnie Young followed by 4 more to Harper & Young and then 9 more to the Gordons which took us to 27th open and the top 20 of these took all the East Section placings.
In the West Section the top two were to the Dundonald Lofts of B CT Foulis & Gill and Roy Irwin with the next bird to Hillfoot’s Jackie Scates & son .The full open and Section results were :

Turning now to the Talbenny Derby where the birds were released with the other NI convoys ay 10.30 am and the Ballylesson loft of K & B McConaghie & son who have
now won the Y/B Derby for Talbenny 4 times in the last 5 years in 2013 1st open 2014 3rd open 2015,2016,2017 1st open and this record may well stand for a long time . The loft mainly managed by Geoff timed their next bird for 3rd open . At 2nd Open was the Killyleagh partnership of McComb Bros and I would hope to give more details of these Birds and the Birds taking the top three in the two Skibbereen Derbies in a future article .
