Annsborough tops Open from Tullamore
At last a Young Bird race which was able to be held on a Saturday, for the 4th young bird race of the season from Tullamore was able to be flown on the appointed day Saturday August 9th albeit with an early liberation to avoid heavy downpours forecast for later that day and also to have the birds home before the scheduled airshow in Newcastle later in the day.
With the wind in the South West the 5,000 plus birds made light work of the journey home with the leading birds all up on velocities of over 1800ypm. Birds were released at 7.45am which meant that fanciers had most of the day left for themselves which in some cases meant going to the airshow.
Topping the open this week was Annsborough’s Mickey Croskery with three together for the top three places, with his next bird at 9th open. Harper & Young from Cloughey are having a tremendous season with 5 to take from 4th to 8th places. Gordon Bros & sons never far from the top again take some of the top places their first three being 10th, 11th and 12th open. Crossgar’s McCartan & Woodsides were 15th open winning the West section with this one and then go on to take the next four places in the section.
Top places in the East section are taken by the first 14 in the open. Early Open and section places were:

BURNSIDE LOFTS BEST FROM MULLINGAR
The third race of the young bird season saw the East Down Combine in Mullingar a distance of on average 105 miles into the Ards Peninsula. Like the previous two weeks when the weather was unsettled at the weekend and we had Sunday races this week it was not until Monday Morning that we raced and the birds were liberated into bright skies and another helping wind. Winning pigeon in the Amalgamation came from the Ballywalter club with the McMaster family clocking a darkened Blue Cock at 10.21 into their loft in the village of Ballyhalbert and this pigeon went on to also be 1st East Section and 2nd Open in the Combine. Winston and son Hugh are having a great year and their latest winner sire is a Verheye via Ken Wilkinson of Antrim and the dam is a Lambrecht cross from Red Star lofts of North Wales. Very well done on your latest success into your Burnside home. The next three pigeons all go to Jackie Rankin racing in Millisle with them homing together.

1st East Down Combine -29th Open 18th North section
W Catherwood & sons (Ballynahinch)

The Irish National Flying Club East Down Combine cup is awarded to the first East Down Combine member who times in the King’s Cup and as has been widely reported this year’s race from St. Allouestre was a difficult one with only 40 birds home in race time and the first EDC bird was to the Ballynahinch loft of W Catherwood &sons who finished 29th Open 18th North section INFC with their 4yo blue chequer hen “Twilight”, so named because she very often finishes late in the evening from these distance races an example of which was the 2013 King’s Cup also from St Allouestre when she was clocked at 10.10pm on the day to finish 91st open 76th North Section. This year it was the next day but this was the only night out this game hen had had this season having flown a number of inland races and one Talbenny and then was prepared for the King’s Cup being trained with John Abernethy. “Twilight” went to the King’s Cup on eggs due to hatch and already in her racing career had notched up considerable results from the French races. I have already mentioned her 2013 result from the King’s Cup and 2012 she had been 24th open 13th West section EDC in the Old bird Derby from St. Malo. In 2011 her sister had been 16th open in the INFC Friendship National and was the 1st EDC pigeon in that race. So what of the breeding of “Twilight”? Well her sire is a blue Louella Van Reet cock a son of “Best Boy” which John Catherwood bought at a sale in Glenavy and the dam is a direct daughter of Fountainhead’s “Norsea” which is part Janssen. Congratulations John on yet another outstanding performance.
This week the Combine Young Birds move on to Mount Charles.
