Lancashire Social Circle
As with many other organisations formed over 100 years ago the Lancashire Social Circle Gatherings are based on a male only functions. This at the time would have seemed normal as when a couple got married the good lady then became a housewife (how times have changed) The Circle revolves around one rule, but upholds the original values and traditions the founders of the club put into practise although years ago. With the ever changing times not only in the sport of pigeon racing, but the way we all live our lives in modern times, the Circle hold a Ladies Weekend that was first started back in the 1980's with events held at different parts of the country. These functions have proved very popular over the past 40 odd years giving members a chance to spoil their wives and partners with a two day break with fine dining great entertainment and a chance to get dressed up (something that has become more of a rarity in modern times)
Arranging these events involves someone with dedication and organising ability, a quality a number of members have put into practice over a number of years that have included Tony Merrick and his wife Kim along with Harry Aspin and his lovely wife Collette to name but a couple. Last year the event saw a down turn in numbers with several of the regular guests having family commitments over that weekend and as a result the event had to be cancelled. This proved a big disappointment to many and Peter Latham and his wife Dawn volunteered to step in and arrange an event. As this was short notice many of the hotels were booked up for the weekend they had planned, so Peter put together a Ladies Day with an overnight stay in the Kensington Hotel at Llandudno, a venue we have used in the past. Several members and guests made the trip to North Wales and although the hotel could not accommodate our whole party for the weekend they had a number of rooms available for the days previous and after the arrange date that some of the longer travellers booked.
The idea of a Ladies Day instead of a full weekend to kick start the event turned out a tremendous success that I am sure Peter and Dawn were most pleased about. We has 6 tables that accommodated almost 60 members, guests along with their partners for a four course meal prior to the entertainer "Tony M" kicking the night off with some easy listening songs from the 1960's and 70's which in all fairness almost all of his audience well remembered. Following a short break that gave us time to draw the raffle with a string of prizes donated by everyone it was time for "Tony M" to get back on stage with a string of songs that had the whole room on the dance floor. One couple who showed the rest of us the right moves that looked like they had come straight from Strictly Come Dancing was David Pritchard and his partner Sue. This took us into the early hours of the morning before the final few made their way to bed. I was surprise the following morning to see so many tucking into breakfast so early following such a late night for so many of them.
I have included a number of photo taken at the Ladies Day event by our very own photographer David Jones who I thank for these as the photos go a long way to make the article. I close with a big thank you to Peter and Dawn for putting the Ladies Day together.
