FLYING INTO THE NORTH WEST OF IRELAND

BILLY KNOX

Fermoy - August 2012

On to Fermoy this week, a distance getting on for two hundred miles for most fanciers in the North West. The NIPA got things right this week when they put the basketing back to Saturday night for a Sunday race. With a touch of south in the wind to help the birds, returns seemed to be quite good for a change. Next week sees the birds at Talbenny, with a comeback race from Tullamore. Only two weeks then after that and that’s it all over for another year.

We’ll have to start again in Omagh this week, where Alan Hall cleans up again, taking the top four positions. And, another Section win for Alan with a second and third Section thrown in for good measure. Top class flying from aloft in top class form. One man, A J Kelly prevents Alan taking all top positions, getting in to take fifth. The full result for Omagh then looks like this, 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Alan Hall 1579, 1578, 1578, 1566, 5th A J Kelly 1559.

On next to the Derry and District where Kieran Reid has another super week taking first and fifth and has the first bird in Derry. Close on his heels this week is Anthony Mc Crudden whose birds have been going well recently, while Cooley Brothers take a good third. The full result for the Derry and District then looks like this, 1st and 5th, B + K Reid 1569, 1520, 2nd and 4th A Mc Crudden 1562, 1524, 3rd Cooley Bros 1542.

In the Rock club this week, two men dominate the result. Tommy White, who has had a great season so far, takes first, third and fifth, while Willie and Darren Hamilton take second and fourth. Super flying from Tommy. The result for the Rock looks like this, 1st, 3rd and 5th T White 1511, 1442, 1433, 2nd and 4th W + D Hamilton 1483, 1442.

Up in the Limavady club this week, that man Witherow is at it again, taking three of the top five positions. Again, super flying from Ronnie, whose season gets better and better. Henderson Crawford gets in on the act to take third, while J Kerr picks up fifth spot. The full result for the Limavady clubs then looks like this, 1st, 2nd and 4th R Witherow 1462, 1443, 1425, 3rd H Crawford 1438, 5th J Kerr 1417.

Next up we go to the Foyle club, where this week, Sean Mc Grotty has a good great race taking first and fourth spots. Paul Maxwell gets back in the frame with second and fifth, while another old hand Hugh Mc Gowan has a good race in third spot. The full result then for the Foyle looked like this, 1st and 4th S Mc Grotty 1563, 1406, 2nd and 5th P Maxwell 1486, 1403, and 3rd H Mc Gowan 1457.

Sean McGrotty

Up in Strabane this week, Gary Mc Gavigan has a super race, taking first and fifth positions. Tommy Ferguson has a good race taking second and fourth, with the ever present John (Buddy) Gamble in third. Good shooting Gary a great result. The full result for Strabane then looks like this, 1st and 5th Gary Mc Gavigan 1426, 1279, 2nd and 4th T Ferguson + Son 1351, 3rd J Gamble 1243.

Gary McGavigan

It’s the Kelly show again in the Londonderry club, where Donal and Joe fill the result on their own. The Sow and grow boys take the top three positions, while Joe and Donal take fourth and fifth. As predicted, the Sow and Grow boys are getting ready for the big ones. The full result then is 1st, 2nd and 3rd D Kelly 1267, 1263, and 1167, 4th and 5th J + D Kelly 1047, 994. It looks like the Londonderry got on the wrong side of the transporter this week again.

The sow and grow lads take the first 3 in Londonderry

Last but not least this week we have the Maiden City club. Top of the pile this week are J + B Knox with a very welcome and long overdue win. A super fly, which sees them with the second bird in Derry and a top six Section spot as well. Second position this week, goes to last week’s winner Pat Cregan, with Martin Brothers Roy and Gary with a good fly to take third. The top five is rounded out with Damien Dunne in fourth and fifth. The full result for the Maiden City then looks like this, 1st J + B Knox 1566, 2nd P Cregan 1520, 3rd Martin Bros 1467, 4th and 5th Quigley + Dunne 1461, 1459.
