Raceday: The birds were held over on the Saturday and liberated at 0625hrs on Sunday 29th July 2012. Weather maps indicated a very tricky race for all UK entries, which would be won over on the Eastern side of the UK with sections D & G taking advantage. An excellent race it turned out to be with five of the seven section winners appearing in the top ten open positions.
1st Open 1st Section D to Charlie Simmons, Basildon timing a 5yr old at 16 09 08 for a velocity of 1399.264
Charlie's champion 5 year old blue pied cock, winner of the BBC from Bordeaux, also won the BICC Agen International race on the 30th of June. This widowhood cock of Soontjen origin contains Mr & Mrs Clayburn’s Black Ring pair and Mardon’s Geschifte bloodlines. He has been a consistent racer and has a number of previous wins to his credit. Mated in mid-ebruary, he was allowed to rear a single young bird before being placed on widowhood. At the start of the season the widowers are allowed free exercise once daily but as the season progresses they go out twice a day and are allowed to do as they please with no forcing. Charlie does not use a breakdown mixture but prefers to feed the cocks Versele Laga Super widowhood mix after each exercise period.

'Andrew, my 3 year old mealy cock, is bred from a Fear Brothers cock and a Sid Miles hen. This pair was given to me by Andrew Tarmas of Radstock 10 years ago. They have always produced some consistently good pigeons. To start the season he spent 3 days out from Eastborne on the bad weekend when everyone lost many good pigeons. He went on to fly 5 races with the BBC, NFC and CFCSC the best being Tarbes with the CSCFC where he took 102nd Open 26th SW section arriving on the second day, these were all flown on the celibate system. After that he was re paired and after 2 training tosses was sent to Bordeaux feeding small youngsters.'
