Around The Up North Combine
Another Combined Average Winning Season For Bowden Bros
By Good Corn
Skelton Green Homing Society held their 2015 presentation evening at the North Skelton Workingmen’s Club; once again it was a very good turnout, which is always a pleasure to see after all the hard work that has gone in to running the Club throughout the season. Andrew Wynn took to the floor to welcome everyone to the Clubs presentation evening, Andrew also welcomed chief guest Mark “Wally” Walton of Guisborough fame who was accompanied by his mates Barry “Bam-Bam” Watson, Trevor ”The Feather” Mitchell & John “Barney” Barnard. Mark won 1st Up North Combine old bird Folkestone National in 1988 from a convoy of 23,653 and 1st UNC Beauvais in 1995 when there were 12,299 birds competing when flying in partnership with his Father Jim, flying as J & M Walton. The Father & Son partnership enjoyed a great number of successful years in their time, winning numerous Club & North Yorks Federation averages. The partnership took a break from the sport around 2000, but Mark returned to racing around 2005 when the partnership of K & M Walton was formed, with the K of the partnership being Mark’s Daughter Katie. The partnership has achieved some top performances, winning at Club & Fed level. Other guests for the night were Terry Callan and his partner Cath of Brotton; I was also invited along and was joined by my Sister Shirley and my Grandson Hayden. After the introductions Andrew gave an overview of the season, saying it has been a long season and a lot of work for all involved, with Andrew giving praise to the members who have helped throughout the year. But 2015 was probably one of the most memorable for the Skelton Green H/S members in a long time, clocking up 8 x 1st East Cleveland Federations and 5 x 2nd Feds. With the Club only failing to score 7 times in the top 10 throughout the 27 race programme, and for nearly half of the races flown if you wanted to win the Club you needed to top the Fed. With Andrew saying that’s, competition of the highest standards. Over the 2015 racing season the Club had a big birdage increase with the Club sending a total of 6,988 birds which was up over 1,000 on 2014, which is good to hear when so many Clubs are losing both membership and birdage. The Club paid out just over £2,700 in prize money throughout the 2015 racing season, which again is very pleasing. Andrew gave special mentions to Bowden Bros who were R/U Combined Fed Average, 3rd in both the Old Bird Inland and Old Bird Combined Fed Averages. A & D Wright was R/U Old Bird Inland Fed Average, R/U Old Bird Combined Fed Average and 3rd Combined Fed Average. Ian Everington was the winner of the Fed Channel Average. The Club Inland Bird Of The Year was a four-way cut on 12pts each with both Chapman, Sons & Swinburne’s and Bowden Bros bird winning 2 x 1st Clubs. While A & D Wright had a bird that won 1 x 1st Club and scored another twice, they also had another bird that had 4 chalks to make it a four-way tie. Mark took to the stage and after his speech he presented the silverware to the worthy winners, then it was the time for the gift of thanks, who Carole thanks the members for. The 3-piece Irish Music band from the Northeast sang and played a few numbers for their first spot, and that was followed by the pie & peas supper and the raffle. The band returned for their second spot to round off a great night, Eion Richardson’s Grandson Jack got on the dance floor to provide his dancing skills and he was later joined by Banno & Hayden. Once again I thank the Skelton Green members for inviting us along for a very enjoyable night and wish you all the best for 2016.

Evo had enjoyed 3 quick-fire wins with all three winner’s being in the top 5 of the Fed, which was very pleasing for Ian after all the very hard work he had put in to his birds to get them fit, more so for the first 2 channel races. Ian’s next points were achieved at the Eastbourne (2) National where a couple of birds were timed to lift 3rd Club, 4th and 12th Fed with the green card scorer taking 2nd £2 Fed Nom banking £47.40; and that was followed up a week later at Reims when another two birds were on the clock to win 1st and 3rd Club with the winner that was 44 minutes in front of the next Pigeon in the Club going on to win a brilliant 1st Fed, 1st £1, £2 and £5 Fed Nom to pocket £142.00, while the green card potter went on to chalk up a useful 14th Fed out of an entry of 215 birds. The lad was on a roll from the French races with 3 x 1st Clubs, 2 x 1st and 1 x 5th Feds, “don’t you just love it when your plans come together?” But it didn’t finish there because there was still the fifth and final channel race of the 2015 racing season still to come, the new race point Burbure that replaced Lillers (2) was no different to Ian as the Lillers, Roye and Reims race point because he also won from there too. Benno of the Roach, Terry & Daniel Bennison & Crame partnership receiving their prize card from Mark.
For the past few presentation nights there has been a special award to the fanciers who had not scored throughout the racing season, the “Must Try Harder” award. Without these fanciers there would be no Club and competition, the most enjoyable thing about Skelton Green is the banter and there is plenty of that, more so when a member scores a minor position because he or she knows they won’t be getting up at the pay-out night to receive the “Must Try Harder” award. This season the smiling Andy Thompson, the laughable Des Williams who did manage to pick up 37th Fed out of the young bird Maidstone National and win some prize money in a local breeder/buyer, Alan Beverley and Andrew & Jackie Wynne also took to the floor to receive their Must Try Harder T-Shirts.
That’s my first 2015 presentation evening report done and dusted, so I will sign off until next time.
